Faculty and campus profile videos: what prospective students and partners look for

Prospective students decide within a few minutes whether a faculty is worth considering. We wrote this guide from the profile videos we produced for faculties and campuses.

A good faculty profile video answers a prospective student’s questions in order: what the faculty teaches, what studying there feels like, which facilities it has and where its graduates go. The main version usually runs three to five minutes, then gets cut into short versions for social media. The Faculty of Medicine video we produced for Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) in 2024 runs 4:37. The faculties we work with use videos like this for promotion and faculty events.

Who watches a faculty profile video

The first audience is prospective students, often with their parents. They compare several campuses at once and watch on their phones. The second is partners and guests: other universities, institutions, or event visitors who need to understand the faculty quickly.

Both groups need the same thing at the start: clarity. The first ten seconds should show the faculty and its campus, not a long logo animation.

What prospective students and partners look for

The order we usually work with:

  1. A short identity: the faculty, the university and what sets it apart.
  2. Study programmes and degree levels.
  3. Learning spaces: classrooms, laboratories, practice rooms and the library.
  4. Lecturers and students, including activities and achievements you can show.
  5. Graduates and networks: where alumni work and the partnerships the faculty holds.
  6. A clear close: the website, social media accounts or how to apply.

Not every point needs equal time. A medical faculty has more practice facilities to show. A law faculty may be stronger on its lecturers and alumni.

One faculty, several study programmes

In 2023 we made one project for the Faculty of Law at Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII): the faculty profile video and videos for its undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programmes. We also composed the background music for this project.

The faculty video runs 4:05, and the master’s and doctoral programme videos 3:10 each. Making them in one project keeps the visual style, music and tone of the narration consistent. A viewer moving from the faculty video to a programme video still feels they are at the same institution.

If your faculty has several programmes, plan it from the start: one umbrella video for the faculty, then shorter videos for each programme that needs its own promotion.

Long and short versions

The main video is used on the website, at events and in presentations. Social media needs much shorter cuts. For Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, we made the UNY Achievements and Facilities video in two versions: 2:26 and 0:31.

A short version works better when it is planned at the storyboard stage rather than cut afterwards. Choose scenes that stand on their own without long narration, and mark them in the storyboard as material for the short cut.

Other work we have made

Besides UNY Medicine, UII Law and UNY, we produced the campus video for Monash University, Indonesia (2:19) and the Tracer Study video for Universitas Gadjah Mada (5:39). You can see them all in our portfolio.

Production and timing

For a faculty profile video we handle the concept, script, storyboard, shooting, drone, editing, motion graphics and voice over. Shooting usually takes 2 to 7 days, editing 1 to 2 weeks, and the whole project 1 to 4 months depending on the concept.

Plan around the academic calendar. The shoot needs classes in session and students on campus, so avoid the holidays. If the video is for student admissions, aim to finish before registration opens.

Start from your faculty’s needs

Tell us about your faculty or study programme, what the video is for and when it has to be ready. We will help shape the concept, including how to split the faculty video, the programme videos and the short versions.
